Would And Should’ve Been – Mel Afoa

She sits there soundlessly,
Perched on the vast rocks of La Perouse,
Reflecting on what would and should’ve been.
The breeze dances around her as she sits pondering,
Gently ruffling her hair, whispering in her ear,
Telling her to join it in its fierce wind dance.

She sits there with a small tender frown,
Staring out into the picturesque sunset,
A magnificent background to the gloomy sea below.
She thinks about what should’ve been,
Just as the wind dance becomes ferocious,
Wondering how it would’ve been if he was still there.

He would’ve been snuggled up against her warm body,
Hands tightly and securely wrapped around her,
Watching the sun fall asleep with her content in his arms.
He would’ve been laughing,
A beautiful sound indeed, as rich and golden as the sunset itself.
He would’ve stood up, done a little wiggly dance,
Before hopping down on the rocks and pushed himself into the ocean.
All without a thought of it.

He’d probably then come out, wet and sticky,
Stripped that favourite yellow shirt of his, throw it on a nearby rock,
And then chase her until she’d bow down to his request of joining him in the water.
He’d take her in his arms to give her body warmth from the cold waves,
His muscular body and arms sheltering her from the underground rocks,
Dangerous seaweed and heartbreak as the float by.

He’d press his wet, salty lips onto hers,
Bodies intertwined, his hands stuck onto her waist, hers in his hair,
And they’d dance in the water until coldness rang its alarm.
He’d be her blanket, shelter and heart.
He should’ve been there.

She sits there reflecting what d and should’ve been,
As the wind dance makes its strongest dance move.
Leaves and specks of bark travel in the air,
Swirling about in the air of the silent beach,
Joining the breeze in it’s dangerous dance.
She ponders on what it would’ve been like,
Had he been with her watching the majestic sunset,
Instead of being quiet and stagnant in the nearby graveyard.
